Legislation in the U.S. House seeks to help non-profits have a better relationship with the federal government. Congressman Fred Upton tells WSJM News the Nonprofit Sector Strength and Partnership Act of 2022 aims to improve access to data about the non-profit sector and help thousands of non-profits work together more effectively in pursuit of shared goals.

“Our local charities are really important, and particularly, maybe even more than ever before as we see rising inflation and prices, knowing that it is tougher to make ends meet, and we’ve got a very vulnerable population that can benefit from some of the charities that can provide some of the services that are needed,” Upton said.

Among other things, Upton says the bill will give non-profits the same kind of support the U.S. Small Business Administration gives to private businesses. The bill seeks to fix haphazard guidance and lax enforcement of grantmaking protections as well as inadequate reporting of data regarding non-profits that policymakers need. The bill is bipartisan and Upton says he believes it can win passage easily.
