Volunteers are signing up to watch sturgeon along the Black River in Cheboygan County in northern Michigan to protect them from poachers. But president of Sturgeon for Tomorrow-Black Lake chapter, Brenda Archambo, told Michigan News Network more are needed.

“Because we usually go from the end of April to the beginning of June, we’re always recruiting m ore and more people who would like to get out on the river and watch spring come to life and see sturgeon in all their glory,” Archambo said.

Archambo says poachers want sturgeon for caviar. She says sturgeon can live up to 150 years and weigh up to 200 pounds.
