The Berrien County Board of Commissioners has approved the Brownfield redevelopment plan for the former Cosmo Extended Stay Motel at 2699 M-139 in Sodus Township near the I-94 Scottdale exit. The motel was severely damaged in a fire in 2018. Sodus Township has been working with 7-Eleven as the company seeks to develop the 11 acre site into a Speedway gas station and convenience store. The sale was delayed for years due to insurance and legal issues, but it was completed in January. The Brownfield plan approved by county commissioners Thursday involves asbestos removal, among other things. The former motel is slated to be torn down. The plan is to get the new Speedway finished and open for business next year. Six people were killed in the fire in July of 2018, all from one family.
