Don Meeks has resigned from the Berrien County Board of Commissioners. Speaking at Thursday’s meeting, Meeks said it’s time to step down after nearly six years.

“I am a kind of person that’s very committed to what he does, and I’ve been really successful over the years with what I’ve done,” Meeks said. “We need the trades. I’m a product of the trades.”

Commission Chair Mac Elliott was sorry to see him go.

“We look  forward to having you stay involved to whatever extent you wish to, but this place will not be the same on Thursday mornings without you here,” Elliott told Meeks.

Commissioner Ezra Scott said he’ll miss the friendship he and Meeks have. Meeks said he wants to do more with his family. He asked commissioners to work on cleaning up Ox Creek, calling its pollution an environmental injustice. He added it’s time to put Benton Harbor on the map. Meeks represented Benton Township on the county commission. The county will now take applications from those interested in replacing him. Applications will be taken through May 10. The term will expire at the end of December.
