There were protests Thursday night in Grand Rapids after videos were released showing the shooting death of a Black man at the hands of a police officer. Grand Rapids City Manager Mark Washington says they released the videos in an effort to be transparent even though the investigation by state police is not complete.

“We can near term speak to exactly what happened and why it happened, and speak to what actions may be taken as a result of this,” Washington said. “Then, talk about the systems, deal with the systems around policing, and determine what about our department needs to change.”

Washington and the new police chief have met with the family of of 26-year-old Patrick Lyoya. During a traffic stop, the white officer and Lyoya scuffled, the officer eventually shooting Lyoya in the head.
