St. Joseph City Commissioners have indicated their support for a housing and commercial development in Benton Harbor. Commissioners heard Monday from Benton Harbor Community and Economic Development Director Alex Little, who told them about Project T. It’s a plan by Harbor Habitat for residential and commercial space at the former Mercy Hospital property. He said there are plans for single family homes and apartment buildings.

“That will house approximately 100 one and two bedroom housing units,” Little said. “It’s anticipated they will be three story buildings, and there will be some commercial space involved.”

Little asked for support from St. Joseph as Benton Harbor seeks state tax credits for the development.

“Anything that’s good for the area is good for us all.”

Little said Harbor Habitat is working with Renovare Development out of Detroit on the plan. St. Joseph Commissioners approved a resolution of support for Project T, directing staff to draft a letter stating their support and for the mayor to sign it. Mayor Laura Goos said Project T looks like a beautiful development that could become a “crown jewel” for the city.
