There will be a forum on student debt Monday at Lake Michigan College in Benton Township. LMC Honors Director Amy Scrima tells WSJM News it’s part of a series of Civil Discourse Forums. They’re intended to address subjects that students feel strongly about, and student debt is one of them.

“It’s been in the news a lot lately, so I think it’s actually perfect timing for us to be talking about this because there’s been lots of ideas put forward about how to deal with this problem,” Scrima said. “Because it is a problem, and we are going to kind of establish that right off the bat with basic public statistics.”

Scrima says there will be three panelists to present different perspectives.

“A policy maker perspective, an administration perspective, and a student perspective. We have fantastic panelists in all three of those areas.”

The panelists are state Senator Kim LaSata, Michigan Department of Treasury analyst Steve Do, and Michigan Department of Education Vice President Pamela Pugh. Each will have five minutes to answer five questions apiece. Students will also be able to ask questions. The forum will be at the Jenkins Lecture Hall at LMC starting at 6 p.m. and you can also watch on Zoom.
