The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department is seeking a new mobile command vehicle. Deputy Dave Albers spoke to county commissioners this week, saying the vehicle would serve as a sort of office on wheels for sheriff’s department staff to work at incident scenes.

“There’s a conference room, and then there’s a work room with a dispatch center and a work station with computers, and then a center area that has a microwave, a refrigerator, and another independent work station.”

The mobile command vehicle will out outfitted with a camera tower and a briefing area. Albers says police currently just work out of their patrol units or while standing outside. The mobile command vehicle would change that.

“From drownings to vehicle pileups to large fires, there’s no end to the emergency situations it would be used in, but also for special events.”

Albers said the sheriff’s department has been working with a firm to put together bids. The price has come in at $802,000. It will take up to 18 months for the vehicle to be ready. Anyone who drives it will need special training.
