An officer with the Grand Rapids Police Department shot and killed a man Monday morning on the city’s southeast side. An officer pulled over a vehicle and after running the license plate, the officer discovered it didn’t match the car. The driver got out of the car and ran away when realizing he would be taken into custody. When the officer caught him, they got into a lengthy fight that ended with the officer opening fire and killing the man. During the struggle, the officer lost his body camera according to Police Chief Eric Winstrom.

“I intend to release the video as soon as feasible,” says Winstrom. “My intention is to do so sometime next week. That gives us enough time to allow the Michigan State Police to conduct a fair investigation without that information being in the public, as well it’ll give me a chance to reach out to the family who I think has the right to see the video before the rest of the public.”

Michigan State Police will be taking over the investigation. No names have been released.
