The newly-created 4th Congressional District has a new candidate in the running. Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad is seeking the office, with his posts on Twitter suggesting he will run as an independent. The new district includes northern Berrien County along with all of Allegan and Van Buren counties, most of Kalamazoo County, southern Ottawa County, and the Battle Creek area of Calhoun County. If both incumbents run, a primary would decide between Congressmen Fred Upton of St. Joseph and Bill Huizenga of Zeeland. Huizenga is in, but Upton has not said for sure. So far, Joseph Alfonso of Holland is the only Democrat in the race. Muhammad says he is running “as a bridge builder, unifying agent, bipartisan champion and someone that will place service above self interest.” He was first elected to the Benton Harbor City Commission in 2009. Muhammad has been mayor since being elected in November 2015.
