Benton Harbor City Commissioners have accepted six parcels of land around the community from Cornerstone Alliance so they could be used for development. Speaking at a Monday meeting, Community and Economic Development Director Alex Little said Cornerstone owns the plots in residential areas, but offered to quit claim deed them back to the city. Commissioner Juanita Henry wondered if the parcels are contaminated. Little said he didn’t know for sure, but they are all in residential neighborhoods surrounded by other houses.

“These properties are not situated in any circumstance where they would have been used for commercial activity or service stations or anything of that nature,” Little said. “I have absolutely no reason to believe that they would have ever been contaminated.”

The parcels are located on Pavone, Broadway, Fair, and McAllister. When asked why Cornerstone Alliance didn’t offer the property to adjacent landowners, Little said the city is in a better position to identify those property owners and make such offers. Mayor Marcus Muhammad suggested they could be offered via quit claim deed for $1 to those residents. The commission voted to accept the parcels with only Henry voting no.
