Work resumes Monday on the big I-94, US-31, I-196 project in Benton Township. Michigan Department of Transportation spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells WSJM News the project to connect US-31 to I-196 is entering the final stages. As work gets started, there will at first be night time double lane closures for some bridge work.

“Starting Monday, April 11, we’re going to shift all of that traffic over on to the westbound lanes, those newly built westbound lanes of I-94, from Britain Avenue to east of I-196, have two lanes over in each direction during that shift. Then we’re going to start rebuilding the eastbound lanes.”

Schirripa says the $120 million project is currently about 60% finished.

“We are hoping to have all of the lane markings down and ribbons cut and all the proper lanes and US-31 open and everything done by the end of this year.”

Schirripa notes when the work is finished, you’ll be able to take one highway all the way from the Mackinac Bridge to Lexington, Kentucky. He advises drivers to keep their eye on Michigan.gov/Drive to be up to date on all of the latest developments.
