South Haven residents could see the cost of their homeowner’s insurance go down soon. That’s because South Haven Area Emergency Services Chief Brandon Hinz tells WSJM News the agency will be hosting the Insurance Services Office this month.

“It’s an agency that evaluates your fire coverage in your area,” Hinz said. “We were reevaluated back in 2016, and we were able to drop our insurance ratings, which means a tax break on our community’s homeowner’s insurance, and they are going to be here in two weeks, actually.”

Hinz says SHAES is always working to improve its fire response times. One thing they do is go to local businesses and create response plans.

“Say we go to Clementine’s today for a fire alarm. When we roll up, we could punch it in on an iPad or somebody if else is in the truck, ‘OK, there’s a hydrant at this corner, this building is suppressed or not suppressed, and here are the hazards in this building. That’s one of the things they look at too.”

Hinz says all of the training SHAES does could also contribute to an improved insurance rating. He says when he first came on with SHAES, the area already had a good insurance rating, and it improved more in 2016. He’s looking forward to having the ISO back in town in a couple of weeks.
