A highly contagious form of avian influenza has been identified in Kalamazoo County. The Van Buren Cass District Health Department says the flu known as HPAI was found in a non-commercial backyard flock. State health officials have been working to limit the spread of the virus and to ensure birds from that flock don’t wind up entering the food system. The health department says consumption of poultry products will not pass along the avian influenza virus, and a thorough cleaning and cooking process would eliminate any trace of the virus. It also says knowing the signs of the avian flu in birds will help prevent its spread. Symptoms include a lack of energy and appetite, a drop in egg production, swelling of the head and eyelids, nasal discharge, a lack of coordination, and sudden death. The department reminds everyone to use safe practices when handling birds.
