A request for proposals has been issued by Indiana Michigan Power as it aims to quadruple its use of solar and wind energy by 2028. I&M spokesperson Tracy Warner told WSJM News this month the utility plans to add about 2,100 megawatts of wind and solar energy, enough to power about 400,000 homes.

“There will be new wind and solar, and what I&M will do is put out requests for proposals from developers to tell us what is the best mix, what is the best location for these,” Warner said. “So, there will be some new wind and solar plants. Exactly where they’ll be located, we don’t know yet.”

I&M has put out word to those contractors who could help identify sites and build the facilities. Warner says it already owns five solar farms, including one near Watervliet. In 2021, more than 80% of the energy I&M generated was emission-free. Bids for new facilities are due April 21, and I&M plans to have contracts with the successful developers by the end of 2022.
