Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad is among the mayors who have met with Governor Gretchen Whitmer in Lansing to discuss priorities for the upcoming budget cycle and other issues that affect Black communities. It was last Wednesday that the governor sat down with Black mayors from across Michigan. Among the things she had to talk about were the 2022 education budget that her office says closed the funding gap faced by school districts. They also discussed the COVID-19 Racial Disparities Task Force, a criminal justice reform bill designed to give hundreds of thousands of Michiganders a clean slate, and the Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies initiative. The mayors say they “are cognizant of how these initiatives will impact not only Black communities, but metropolitan centers across Michigan.”
