The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department is bringing back its Community Emergency Response Team, and anyone interested in signing up for training can do so now. The sheriff’s department says the CERT program is a way for volunteers to be trained in basic disaster response skills, like fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. CERT is designed to offer a consistent, nationwide approach to volunteer training and organization that professional responders can rely on during disaster situations so they can focus on more complex tasks. Van Buren County’s CERT program has been on hiatus for several years. Sheriff Dan Abbot says he’s excited to bring it back. You can learn about signing up at the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department website.
