State school leaders have presented a virtual State of Michigan Schools roundtable to provide an overview on where schools currently stand with more than half of the school year complete and highlight the need for budget certainty from Lansing. They say it’s needed to prepare for the next school year and beyond. Wayne County RESA Superintendent Daveda Colbert told lawmakers they’re doing the best they can to meet the academic and emotional needs of students.

“While federal COVID relief dollars are helping our students work through the challenges the pandemic has presented, the reality is that many of the decisions that most directly aid in our students recovery cannot be made with one time funding, nor can they be implemented overnight.”

Colbert says it’s important to have bipartisan support so Lansing can pass, no later than July 1, a 2022-2023 school aid budget. She says it’s needed so the state can assure it has teachers and all necessary support staff in place to move forward.
