The deadlines are approaching for the quarter one grants being offered by the Berrien Community Foundation. Program Director Susan Matheny tells WSJM News the first quarter means hundreds of thousands of dollars going to non-profits and others through the grants. Among the grant programs is the Heart of Cook.

“It’s our goal to help resources meet needs in the community and one of the ways we do this is we help other philanthropic organizations meet their philanthropic goals through grant making,” Matheny said. “So, we provide grant administration for organizations like the Cook nuclear plant’s giving arm, the Heart of Cook grants.”

The Heart of Cook this year also offers a new grant with the Heart of Cook Earth Day Grants, focused on environmental projects. Matheny says the Golden Acorn Classroom Mini Grants are for teachers.

“We encourage lots off teachers to apply, and those are for special projects you might want to run in your classroom.”

There are also the Frederick S. Upton Foundation grants that go to non-profits. The deadlines vary for each program, but they’re all in February or March. Matheny also notes BCF scholarship applications are due March 4. The foundation has more than 70 of them available this year. You can find applications at BerrienCommunity.org.
