The Allegan County Sheriff’s Department is getting a new K9 officer thanks to a donation. The Holland Michigan Kennel Club and President Kim Caines presented Sheriff Frank Baker with a check for $13,500 last week to be used for the purchase of a new police K9. This will allow for the retirement of K9 Lajki who has served since 2017. Lajki was also purchased with the help of a Holland Michigan Kennel Club donation. The club also purchased long retired K9 Lucky in the fall of 2010. The Allegan County Sheriff’s Department has four K9 deputies, allowing for a K9 on each of its 12 hour shifts. The K9s are trained in tracking and drug detection. The sheriff’s department says when a K9 handler is able to locate a missing person or lost child with the help of their K9, it’s one of the most rewarding moments.
