A Berrien Township resident is dead following a fire on Saturday. The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says neighbors reported a mobile home fire at River Springs Estates off Old US-31 around 9:35 p.m. Responding police were not able to enter the home due to thick smoke and flames. The Pipestone-Berrien Township Fire Department and the Eau Claire Fire Department with assistance from the Berrien Springs-Oronoko Township Fire Department put out the fire. The burned remains of the victim were found inside. The Michigan State Police Fire Marshall Division is investigating the cause of the fire while the Western Michigan Medical University Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy identify the remains. Neighbors told police an elderly man lived there.
