It will still be about two years before the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario is ready to open, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot of work taking place at the site. Andy Doctoroff is Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s point person on the international crossing and spoke to the MDOT podcast, Talking Michigan Transportation, this week. He said the bridge now has two concrete piers on each side of the border rising from the ground. They’re now nearly 400 feet tall, but will be around 700 feet tall when finished, meaning the Detroit pier will be the tallest structure in the city. That’s not all.

“Tons of work is being done on the ports of entry, creating the foundations of the buildings that will occupy the ports of entry,” Doctoroff said. “There’s been tons of work on the roads. For example, just last month we opened two new overpasses that are complete streets, really quality overpasses that will benefit the community.”

Doctoroff said the new bridge is designed to cater to more than just vehicle traffic, but also pedestrians, noting the view of Detroit’s skyline from the middle of the bridge will be impressive. Ahead of her State of the State address, Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s office this week released a series of videos showing progress that has been made on the $5.7 billion bridge. Doctoroff says it will be a major economic benefit, allowing faster trade across the border with Canada.
