1908 U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt declared the Grand Canyon a national monument saying, “Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is. Do nothing to mar its grandeur, sublimity, and loveliness. You cannot improve on it.”
1922 A 14-year-old diabetic was given the first injection of insulin at Toronto General Hospital. He had been slipping in and out of a diabetic coma and was about to die. The injections immediately improved his symptoms.
1935 Famed aviator Amelia Earhart became the first person to fly from Honolulu, Hawaii to Oakland California.
1964 A report on “Smoking and Health was given to the Surgeon General of the United States” and published by the Surgeon General’s Advisory Committee warning of the health issues of tobacco smoking. It resulted on warnings being put on cigarette packaging.

1986 The Pet Shop Boys scored their first No.1 single with ‘West End Girls.’ The first version of the song was released in April 84, becoming a club hit in the U.S., after the duo signed with EMI, the song was re-recorded with producer Stephen Hague.
