What can state and local officials do to prevent another tragedy like the Oxford school shooting, which left four students dead and others injured? Governor Gretchen Whitmer says there are no easy answers.

“I don’t want to pre-judge what that looks like, because I earnestly want to bring people to the table and say ‘What can we do?’. There are various facets that fed into this type of violence. What can we do in the policy space, recognizing there’s much work for all of us to do in society on this front.”

The governor adds that she is sickened by the copycat threats that have been taking place since last month’s tragedy in Oxford. Dozens of students in the state, some as young as middle school, have been charged with criminal offenses after allegedly posting online threats that they were planning an attack on their school.
