Congressman Fred Upton will pay his respects to the late Bob Dole when Dole’s body lays in state at the Capitol Thursday. Upton tells WSJM News he remembers Dole well as the two worked near each other and would sometimes share flights. Dole reminds Upton of a better time.

“It reminds us of the days of old when Congress actually worked together, when you could get things done, when your word was your bond and you didn’t have folks attacking from one side or the other, and it seemed as though the trains ran on time,” Upton said. “He was a guy with a lot of sharp wit. I’ve got a lot of stories. I happened to work at the White House when he was the Majority Leader, and I worked literally out of his office.”

Upton says he longs “for the respected and class days of Bob Dole and know he was mighty frustrated with the chaos of the current Congress.” He remembers one Michigan Honor Flight to Washington that included some World War II vets, and Dole was waiting for them, in a wheelchair, when they arrived. Upton sys Dole worked for his whole career to help veterans, and he was instrumental in getting the Washington World War II memorial built.
