The Better Business Bureau of West Michigan is advising everyone how they can avoid being the victims of shipping scams this holiday season. The BBB’s Kate Grevious tells WSJM News the most common scams are phishing scams in which a customer will get an email or other message saying they have a delivery that’s run into a problem.

“Those are messages that have maybe a link or instructions to do something more, saying your package has been delayed or you need to call someone or click on this link to update personal information like your shipping address or your credit card number,” Grevious said.

Don’t fall for it. Grevious says take matters into your own hands in those cases and check with the seller yourself. Another common shipping scam is porch pirates. Grevious says you should have a package delivered to your workplace or left with a trusted neighbor. Follow its tracking information closely to know when it’s been delivered and consider getting a doorbell camera. You can find out more at BBB.org/AvoidScams.
