Governor Gretchen Whitmer has declared this month as Michigan Christmas Tree Month. Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development spokesperson Jennifer Holton says Michigan ranks third in the country for the number of Christmas trees harvested. Despite a Christmas tree shortage, she says we’re doing well.

“Michigan is actually faring pretty well, all things considered,” Holton said. “You might not get the exact size that you were hoping to get in previous years, or maybe you wanted a balsam, fir, but you can only get a Scotch pine. There’s going to be trees available, so you should still be able to go out and get the one that you like.”

There are more than 560 Christmas tree farms on 37,000 acres across the state. Holton says Christmas tree sales amount to up to $40 million for Michigan’s economy every year.
