Deer hunters will take to the fields on Monday for the start of firearm deer season. Michigan Department of Natural Resources deer biologist Chad Stewart told Michigan News Network it’s big deal.

“Usually we have about 500,000 hunters participate over the course of that 16 day season,” Stewart said. “So, it is by far our most participated in and most impactful deer season that we have here in Michigan.”

Stewart says the best hunting in is the Lower Peninsula. He says the number of hunters has dropped a bit since last year, during the height of the pandemic. An ammo shortage could affect the firearm season as a result of ongoing supply chain issues.
