46 years have now passed since the Edmund Fitzgerald sank in the waters of Lake Superior during a storm. Special events are being held around the state and in Detroit today to mark the anniversary. On Sunday, the Mariners Church in downtown Detroit will hold its annual ceremony to honor the 29 lives lost. Reverend Jeffrey Hubbard spoke with Michigan News Network.

“This is a chance for anyone in our region to come and to participate and to remember the men who have perished on the lakes throughout our history,” Hubbard said.

Hubbard says the memorial is at 3 p.m. and the congregation will pray, sing, and then ring the bell 29 times. He says the memorial is open to anyone and for those who cannot attend in person, you can view it online at Mariner’s Church of Detroit on Facebook.
