Planning a trip over Thanksgiving? AAA says 53.4 million Americans will travel over Thanksgiving, up 13% from last year. 1.6 million Michigan residents will travel for Thanksgiving, up 14% from 2020 and that’s despite the highest gas prices of the year at $3.43 a gallon.

“It’s definitely not stopping people,” says AAA Michigan spokeswoman Adrienne Woodland. “People want to get out and about and spend that time with family, and so what we’re seeing is folks with higher gas prices, they’ll choose other places where the cut money such as in food, lodging, and activities.”

Woodland says the re-opening of the US borders to international travelers means airports will be even busier than we’ve seen recently, so you should plan for longer lines and extra time for TSA checks.
