Christmas Tree Supply Might Be Tight

It’s a little early, but you may want to start looking for a Christmas tree now because supplies are tight this year. Michigan State University Horticulture & Forestry Professor, Bert Cregg, says Michigan ranks third in the country for live trees.

“The Christmas tree industry has always been cyclic, so from the time a grower plants a seedling until they can harvest a Christmas tree, a six-to-seven foot tree a normal consumer would buy, that can take eight to ten years,” says Cregg. “So the trees people are buying this year are trees planted eight to ten years ago.”

Cregg says we were coming out of a recession then and many growers scaled back. He does think everyone who wants a live tree will be able to get one. Artificial Christmas trees are being affected by supply chain issues.
