Representatives of a group that advocates for those who have suffered brain injuries in traffic crashes are speaking out after it was announced all drivers in Michigan are be getting a refund from the Catastrophic Claims Association. Tom Constand is the president of the Brain Injury Association of Michigan.

“It’s hundreds of dollars from the wrong pot, and that’s the Catastrophic Claims Fund, money that’s exclusively designed to be the money that’s set aside to reimburse for catastrophic injuries,” Constand said. “I can tell you that for those people who are in that fund, this is kind of a slap in the face.”

Constand says that instead of taking out the fund while care to the long-term injured is being cut, he thinks state officials should follow through on their promise to reduce premiums. Governor Gretchen Whitmer this week called on the claims association to refund a major surplus to drivers, which the association later voted to do. They’re not saying how much the refunds will be.
