The next engagement of the South Haven Speaker Series will be this Thursday, and the topic of discussion will be Afghanistan. The series says Hope College Political Science Professor Joel Toppen, whose academic work focuses on U.S. foreign policy and global governance, will analyze the country from an historical perspective and offer his insights on the war and the implications of the Taliban’s return to power. There was bipartisan support in Congress and a general consensus among Americans for ending the 20 year war in Afghanistan, but the withdrawal and subsequent evacuation has been called into question on many fronts. Toppen will seek to shed more light on the background of the situation. The presentation will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the South Haven campus of Lake Michigan College. Admission will be $10.
