The South Haven City Council will hold a public hearing for a proposed ordinance to provide a property tax exemption and service charge in lieu of taxes for the Habitat Company’s first phase of developing the Overton site as affordable housing on October 18. While the council approved the hearing Monday night, they heard plenty of comments from the public about the contamination on the site.

“I do not believe it is fair to engage the public in conversations on any next steps until either we have recommitted to the original stated goal, or we’ve just made clear that the goal for this proposal has changed,” said one woman. Another asked if the Overton property was the “only focus of affordable housing for my neighbors?”

Mayor Scott Smith said they understand about environmental concerns.

“We do not want to do anything, obviously, that would impact people’s health,” said Smith.

Councilmember Joe Reeser added he was disappointed Habitat Company has not been at the last two council meetings.
