The American Electric Power Foundation has made a $50,000 donation to the city of Buchanan to fund the McCoy’s Creek Trail Extension Project, which will expand the trail another half mile. AEP’s Schnee Garrett tells WSJM News McCoy’s Creek Trail is a roughly five-mile path running along McCoy’s Creek through downtown Buchanan and E.B. Clark Woods. It includes historical markers and natural elements that tell the history of Buchanan and the region.

“The McCoy’s Creek Trail Extension Project would extend the existing trail a half of a mile down River Street and across River Street Bridge and into Buchanan Township, which ultimately connects the trail to River St. Joe Brewery and Flatwater Farms,” Garrett said.

Garrett says the $50,000 grant for the project matches the AEP Foundation’s goal of helping to improve the health, quality of life, and economies in the communities it serves. Buchanan Mayor Sean Denison says it’s estimated 75% of Buchanan’s 4,500 residents live within walking distance of the trail, and this project will get even more people to walk it. Work on the extension is expected to take place in 2023.
