A new $2.1 billion plan to help grow the middle class, support small businesses, and invest in communities in Michigan has been announced. Governor Gretchen Whitmer outlined the plan this week, saying the money would come from federal American Rescue Plan funds.

“Getting back to where we were pre-COVID isn’t enough,” Whitmer said. “We’re going to do better. There are too many jobs that just don’t pay enough. There aren’t enough workers to fill open jobs. There aren’t enough workers with the necessary skills to fill the high skill jobs that are available. We need to support more entrepreneurship, and we need to provide housing that is affordable, attainable, and accessible.”

The governor says the focal points address the state’s largest economic challenges including too many jobs that don’t pay enough. The program needs legislative approval.
