Firearms deer hunting season opened today. Chad Stewart at the DNR told Michigan News Network after years of declining numbers of hunters, last year about 5% more people took to the woods during the pandemic.

“Our hunters last year by and large had a lot of success, a lot of success especially in the southern lower part of Michigan,” Stewart said.

250,000 deer were killed in the southern lower peninsula last year. Stewart expects the numbers this year to be that high or greater. Saturday and Sunday are the Liberty Hunt for kids and people with disabilities. Regular firearm deer season starts November 15.
