Athletics 8, Tigers 6 – Lowrie, Canha help A’s start fast in 8-6 win over Tigers
Jed Lowrie hit a three-run homer in the first inning for the first of Oakland’s eight two-out runs against Matt Manning in the Athletics’ 8-6 victory over the Tigers on Thursday. Mark Canha followed Lowrie’s shot with another homer for 4-0 lead. It was the 14th homer of the season for both Lowrie and Canha, and each went to the opposite field to reach the seats. Lowrie drilled a 411-foot shot to left-center, and Canha drove one out to right-center. Lowrie’s RBI double in the fourth made it 8-0 before the Tigers battled back by scoring six runs.

Cubs 6, Pirates 5 – F/11 – Cubs beat Pirates 6-5 on Difo error in 11th
Sergio Alcántara scampered home when second baseman Wilmer Difo mishandled a popup in the 11th inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 for their third straight win. Rafael Ortega and Ian Happ homered for Chicago, and Alcántara logged the first three-hit game of his career. Codi Heuer got three outs for the win. Alcántara began the 11th on second base and advanced on Ortega’s sacrifice bunt. Happ then sent a high fly to second, where Difo committed the game-ending error.

NCAAFB – No. 9 Notre Dame travels to Florida State for season opener
Notre Dame is returning to being an independent and the ninth-ranked Fighting Irish look to show they have found a transfer quarterback — Jack Coan from Wisconsin — and a cohesive offensive line that can lead the team back to the College Football Playoff. Meanwhile, in Year 2 for Mike Norvell at Florida State, there are pressing questions on both sides of the ball and the Seminoles are seeking confidence in September. Florida State is also seeking to pull off an upset to spark the rebuild.

NCAA – Michigan State AD Alan Haller plans to make changes on Day 1
Michigan State athletic director Alan Haller says he will unveil a restructuring plan for the department when he is formally introduced next week. One of the ideas he shared was having football and basketball games on the same day as other competitions on campus to give fans access to multiple events. Haller is a former Spartans football player and deputy athletic director. Haller was a lieutenant for the university police department for 13 years before beginning to work for the athletic department in 2010. He became the school’s deputy athletic director in 2019.

NCAA – ‘How is this guy still employed?’: NCAA’s Emmert a survivor
Mark Emmert is now the second-longest tenured leader in the long history of the NCAA. Over 11 years, he has guided the NCAA through a period of unprecedented change amid relentless criticism. Emmert is the face of an unpopular and seemingly ineffective bureaucracy and his leadership is often questioned. Those who have worked for or alongside Emmert say he is a survivor and  a "political animal” who relates well to the university presidents he answers to. He was recently given a contract extension.

Tennis – US Open – Djokovic wins first set in 2nd round at US Open
Novak Djokovic has won the first set of his second-round match. Now he will hope for a smoother second set than he had Tuesday. The No. 1 seed has a 6-2 lead over Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Djokovic easily took the first set against Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune in the first round before the Danish qualifier got the crowd on his side and won a second-set tiebreaker. But he battled cramps after that and Djokovic quickly won the final two sets. That got Djokovic started on what he hopes will be his men’s-record 21st Grand Slam title and his fourth of this season.

NFL – Bills won’t renew lease in July ’23 without new stadium deal
The Buffalo Bills won’t renew their lease with the state and county without a partially publicly funded agreement in place for a proposed new $1.4 billion stadium, team executive Ron Raccuia tells Buffalo’s WBEN-Radio. Raccuia says the topic of relocation has not been raised during discussions but declined to say what the NFL team’s options would be once the lease expires in July 2023. Raccuia is senior vice president for Pegula Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Bills. He provided a wide-ranging interview in which he confirmed the cost, size and location of the Bills proposal to build a stadium in Orchard Park, New York, across the street from their current facility.

NHL – Coyotes submit proposal for two land parcels in Tempe
The Arizona Coyotes have submitted a bid for two parcels of a 46-acre tract of land in what could be the first step to landing a permanent home. The City of Tempe said it received one response before the deadline to a request for proposals issued in July for a mixed-use project incorporating a professional sports franchise and entertainment district on city-owned land near Arizona State University. The city legally could not name the entity that submitted the response, but the Coyotes confirmed in a statement they put in the bid. The evaluation process is expected to take several months and will include extensive examinations, with opportunities for community feedback.

Covid – United Center requiring proof of vaccination, negative test
The United Center in Chicago is requiring people attending events, including Bulls and Blackhawks games, to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test. The policy takes effect immediately and applies to fans as well as arena and team employees. The United Center will accept printed or digital proof of vaccination or negative test. That includes a photo of the original vaccine card, negative test or a digital vaccine card through an app. Anyone under 12 can provide proof of a negative test. There will be no testing at the arena.

Golf – PGA – Cantlay starts with lead and keeps his distance at East Lake
Patrick Cantlay met his goal at the Tour Championship and it had nothing to do with the score on his card or the size of his lead. He shot a 67 at East Lake. And he still leads by two. Cantlay started at 10-under par and with a two-shot lead because of his No. 1 seed in the FedEx Cup. He was determined to treat this like any other tournament. Jon Rahm had a 65. He started four shots behind and now is only two back. Harris English had a hole-in-one and was five back along with Bryson DeChambeau.

Golf – Amateur – Gene Elliott wins US Senior Amateur for 1st USGA title

Soccer – CONCACAF – US draws 0-0 at El Salvador in World Cup qualifying opener
The United States showed promise but no ability to finish in its pandemic-delayed World Cup qualifying opener, drawing 0-0 at El Salvador in the type of Central American stadium that repeatedly has stymied the Americans. Both teams created few chances before a boisterous yet polite sellout crowd of about 30,000 that started filling Monumental Estadio Cuscatlán, Central America’s largest, about 8 1/2 hours before kickoff. The U.S., trying to rebound from its failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, failed to win its sixth straight road qualifier dating to 2016.
