Clean, lead-free water is now available at Benton Harbor High School. The city and Nalgene have installed a water filtration system for students and staff to fill up water bottles. Nalgene’s Rasta Smith tells our newsgathering partners at WSBT-22 the upgrade is to protect people from having lead in their water.

“Without having clean water, we take away all the aspects of life,” says Smith. “You downgrade. It’s dangerous, because it destroys your body.”

Reverend Ed Pinkney is a project coordinator and says children are the future.

“They must have clean water. Lead in the water is poison. It poisons the mind, the liver, and makes children unproductive.”

The filters are designed to last between 9 months and a year, and the high school has been given 9 extra filters.

Benton Harbor has been working to replace lead water lines, and that effort will last several years. Elementary schools in Benton Harbor will get the water system in 2022.
