Tigers 8, Athletics 6 – Cabrera hits career homer No. 502, Tigers beat Athletics 8-6
Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer, No. 502 of his career, and drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the seventh inning as the Detroit Tigers snapped a four-game skid with an 8-6 win over the Oakland Athletics. Akil Baddoo and Harold Castro homered and drove in two runs apiece for Detroit, which had lost 12 straight at home to Oakland. Joe Jimenez (5-1) tossed an inning of scoreless relief for the win, and Gregory Soto earned his 17th save. Matt Olson drove in three runs for the A’s, who had won three straight.

White Sox 6, Pirates 3 – Rookie Sheets hits 2 HRs, White Sox beat Pirates 6-3
Rookie Gavin Sheets hit two home runs, leading the Chicago White Sox to a 6-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night. Sheets, who was promoted from Triple-A Charlotte before the game, hit a three-run homer off Max Kranick (1-3) with two out in the fourth inning to snap a scoreless tie. White Sox starter Carlos Rodon (10-5) pitched five innings of five-hit ball.

Cubs 3, Twins 0 – Schwindel homers, Cubs shut down Twins hitters in 3-0 win
Frank Schwindel hit a three-run homer and a pair of Chicago Cubs pitchers combined on a two-hitter in a 3-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Justin Steele won for the first time since joining the Cubs’ rotation on Aug. 10. The rookie left-hander gave up one hit, walked three and struck out three over five innings, lowering his ERA to 3.48. Adbert Alzolay worked the final four innings to earn his first career save. He allowed one hit and struck out five. Schwindel’s drive in the third was all the Cubs mustered against U.S. Olympic pitcher Joe Ryan, who made his major league debut for the Twins.

MLB – AP Source: Smoltz, Leiter refuse vaccine, will work remotely
John Smoltz and Al Leiter are not making in-studio appearances for MLB Network after refusing to get the coronavirus vaccine, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because they aren’t at liberty to publicly discuss personnel matters. Smoltz and Leiter will still do analysis for studio shows but it will be remotely instead of from the network’s Secaucus, New Jersey, studio. The MLB Network’s policy making it mandatory for all employees to be vaccinated took effect Wednesday.

NCAAFB – Transfer time: New rule brings college football free agency
This season will be the first since the NCAA tweaked its rules to give all football players the freedom to transfer once and be immediately eligible to play at a new school. Full-on college football free agency is here. Teams can now revamp their rosters and bolster their depth charts much the way its done in the NFL. No team in college football has more riding on transfers this season than Florida State. The Seminoles have 14 transfers on the roster this season.

NCAA – Michigan State names Haller as new athletic director
Michigan State has named deputy athletic director and Spartan football alumnus Alan Haller its new athletic director. Haller has been deputy athletic director since 2019 and with the athletic department since 2010. The former campus police lieutenant played for coach George Perles before a three-year NFL career. Haller chaired the search for the university’s sixth chief of police and has also served in the searches for MSU’s two most recent head football coaches, Mark Dantonio and current coach Mel Tucker.

NFL – 2021 Preview – Lions made changes that may not translate to success in 2021
The Detroit Lions made a lot of changes in the offseason by bringing in a new general manager, coach and quarterback. The franchise with one playoff victory since winning the NFL title in 1957 is coming off three straight double-digit loss seasons. Detroit might be doomed with at least 10 losses again. General manager Brad Holmes and coach Dan Campbell might be able to eventually turn the team around. It’s just difficult to envision that happening this season with quarterback Jared Goff and a defense that might not be better than last year’s historically bad unit.

NFL – 2021 Preview – Bears seek improvement with Dalton at QB, Fields behind him
The Chicago Bears gave their frustrated fan base a big jolt of excitement when they traded up nine spots with the New York Giants to draft Justin Fields with the No. 11 pick. The former Ohio State star showed promise during the preseason. But he is set to open as the backup to veteran newcomer Andy Dalton. General manager Ryan Pace and coach Matt Nagy are under scrutiny after the Bears went 8-8 in the regular season for the second year in a row. Chicago made the playoffs as the seventh seed in an expanded field, then bowed out with a wild-card loss at New Orleans.

NFL – 2021 Preview – Colts counting on Wentz to rebound from frustrating start
The Indianapolis Colts are giving Carson Wentz a fresh start. They’ve surrounded him with a strong supporting cast. They still believe he’s a franchise quarterback. And if Wentz stays healthy, they think he can take them to the Super Bowl. But it’s been a frustrating first few weeks for the former North Dakota State star and Eagles QB. He missed three weeks with an injured left foot, returned for three practices on a limited basis and now that he’s landed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, Wentz is facing even more scrutiny.

NFL – Saints opener vs. Packers moved to Jacksonville after Ida
The New Orleans Saints will play their season opener in Jacksonville after being displaced by Hurricane Ida. Instead of playing in the Superdome for the Sept. 12 opener against the Green Bay Packers, the Saints will host the game at the home of the Jaguars. The Superdome appears to have been spared significant damage from the powerful Category 4 hurricane. But there are logistical challenges with staffing an NFL game there in the near future because of the widespread damage in the New Orleans area.

Golf – Ryder Cup – Mickelson, Couples added as assistant Ryder Cup captains
Phil Mickelson is returning for his 13th consecutive Ryder Cup, this time without his clubs. Mickelson fills out the roster of five assistant captains to Steve Stricker for the American team that tries to win the cup back from Europe at Whistling Straits later this month. Fred Couples also was announced as an assistant. He joins Jim Furyk, Zach Johnson and Davis Love III. Mickelson holds the Ryder Cup record with 12 appearances as a player. That dates to 1995 at Oak Hill. The Americans won three of those 12 Ryder Cups.

FIFA – New-look US opens World Cup qualifying, 4 years after flop
A new-look U.S. soccer team opens World Cup qualifying in El Salvador on Thursday night, four years after a loss at Trinidad and Tobago ended a streak of seven straight appearances for the Americans in soccer’s showcase. Christian Pulisic will miss the game. He hasn’t played in a match since Aug. 14, missing Chelsea’s last two games following a positive COVID-19 test. Gregg Berhalter, coach of the 10th-ranked U.S., must choose from among three goalkeepers with no previous experience in qualifying: Zack Steffen, Matt Turner and Ethan Horvath. No. 64 El Salvador last reached the World Cup in 1982.

FIFA – Canada coach on spying in CONCACAF: ‘It’s a tricky place’
Honduras stopped a training session ahead of its World Cup qualifier against Canada after spotting a drone above the field, according to reports in Honduran media. Canada coach John Herdman says “I’d imagine there’s probably a lot of people in Canada that fly drones.” He adds "I know for sure we won’t be heading into people’s countries too early because with drones these days, people can obviously capture footage. You’ve got to be really careful. So yeah, you got to be careful in CONCACAF. It’s a tricky place.”
