Congressman Fred Upton sees some trouble ahead for the bipartisan infrastructure package approved by the U.S. Senate this month. He tells WSJM News there are signs Democrats in the House will throw a wrench in its progress in that chamber.

“You’ve got a number of progressives, the liberal Democrats who are wanting a package that’s almost triple the size of what the Senate did,” Upton said. “You’ve got issues by some wanting to undo the Trump tax cuts as part of that.”

Upton says the Problem Solvers Caucus is looking at ways to get an up or down vote on the $1.2 trillion Senate package. He says what happens partly depends on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has indicated she favors the alternative legislation.

“At this point, I don’t think she’s going to have the points for her bill, but who knows what happens in a week’s time. They’re going to be working very hard to get all of the Democrats to support a much larger package.”

Upton describes the Senate package’s position as “tenuous.” He does believe the Senate package would pass, though, if given a vote.
