The Michigan House Oversight Committee is looking at the state Unemployment Insurance Agency after a variety of problems with benefits during the pandemic. Emily Mitchell testified this week she received benefits during the pandemic and then got a job. She says she has received letters saying she owed $27,000 to the state.

“I provided UIA with every single document I could think of,” Mitchell said. “W2s, emails, pictures of different IDs, and everything else I needed. So I followed all of the rules and I was transparent about everything. Why should I be punished and why should others be punished for doing what we were supposed to do?”

An attorney who represents several people says the unemployment agency has had problems for several years, ever since it laid off many people. The committee plans to hold more hearings.
