The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department has deactivated the Emergency Operations Center following its opening this week due to flooding and power outages. Speaking at Thursday’s meeting of the Berrien County Board of Commissioners, Commissioner Jim Curran said the county is well prepared for emergencies.

“Because of our exercises that we do with the Cook nuclear plant, our EOC really runs rather well,” Curran said. “In this case, when we do our Cook drills, we have a representative of the Cook plant at the EOC with us. So if you have a question, you can go right to the source and you know where it’s coming from, and they also have contacts inside Cook that they can talk to. In this case, we had a representative from AEP in the EOC with us.”

Curran and other commissioners thanked the emergency response team for its quick action and coordination due to the EOC. The sheriff’s department this week offered cooling stations for those with no power and directed those with flood damage to the correct place to report it.
