More winners of the MI Shot to Win vaccine sweepstakes were announced on Wednesday. Protect Michigan Commission Director Kerry Ebersole Singh said nearly 64% of the state has gotten at least one COVID-19 vaccine shot while the goal remains to get to 70% of those age 16 and older protected. She says the vaccine sweepstakes has made a difference.

“We are excited that especially after we got beyond that July 4 holiday, we again started to climb those first week vaccinations,” Singh said.

The winners announced Wednesday were $50,000 winners, or people who got their shots in July. The winner for July 14 was a Port Huron woman and the winner for July 15 was a West Bloomfield man. The winner for the July 17 was an Upper Peninsula woman whose vaccination was delayed due to her battle with cancer. Diedre Malloy talked about her experience.

“Winning this has been just a real ray of sunshine,” Malloy said. “It still seems surreal, but I see a light at the end of the tunnel, and in this case, I know it’s not a train.”

The $2 million grand prize winner of the sweepstakes will be announced on August 18.
