The Michigan Department of Transportation is taking a more diverse route to finding and recruiting new talent. The department’s Transportation Diversity Recruitment Program draws students from Historic Black Colleges and Universities to work alongside the pros on road and bridge projects. Former MDOT operations head Greg Johnson helped develop the program eight years ago.

“It’s a benefit as students get experience, they get to earn some money, but they also get exposed to the DOT and exposed to fine universities in the state of Michigan,” says Johnson.

At the very least, Johnson says the program also educates students on the importance of quality transportation.
