Flood victims in the Detroit area have been calling the Michigan Attorney General’s office to report they’ve been scammed. AG Dana Nessel says while it started with drivers saying they were gouged by tow truck drivers, now the calls are from those getting repairs to flooded basements. Nessel says it’s important to do your research before hiring anyone for home repairs.

“Make sure that you check the pricing of whatever the company is,” Nessel said. “Look up the company, see what their rating is with the Better Business Bureau, and make sure you’re not paying in cash or you’ll never get your money back if there’s a problem.”

Nessel says you should never put up more than one third of the cost up front, advising everyone to operate on a pay as you go basis.
