The city of New Buffalo is receiving some grants from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for recreational water projects. The DNR this week announced more than $4 million in grants for recreational boating projects around the state. Two of the 23 grants are for New Buffalo. One grant of $189,000 is going to the city to upgrade the electric system at its marina. The other grant is for $500,000 and is for marina broadside dockage and erosion controls. The DNR’s Jordan Byelich spoke with WSJM News about the grants.

“The city of New Buffalo’s got a lot of really nice things going on for recreational boating for the public down there,” Byelich said. “I would say it’s right around $2.3 million in improvements there with about just shy of $700,000 in DNR grants through the waterways fund.”

They are matching grants. Byelich says the grants are made possible through the DNR Parks and Recreation Division’s waterways grant program, which began in 1949 and is supported by boat registration fees and a portion of Michigan’s gas tax.
