Do you ever worry about hazardous materials being transported through Michigan on trucks? Michigan State Police are checking those kind of trucks all week with the annual Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Hazardous Material Road Blitz. Michigan State Police Lieutenant David Haynes spoke with Michigan News Network this week.

“We’ll take a closer look at specifically hazardous materials that are being transported,” Haynes said. “If there are violations or safety concerns with HAZMAT, it does have very negative side effects. We’re being proactive in trying to prevent those from occurring.”

Haynes says some of the hazardous materials hauled include gasoline, batteries, and household cleaners. He says there are accidents occasionally, including one a few years ago where a truck carrying fireworks got into a massive pileup on I-94 in Kalamazoo County.
