This weekend offers three free recreation opportunities in Michigan. It’s a Free Fishing, Free Recreation Passport, and Free ORV weekend. That means you can go fishing without a license, go ORVing on state tails without a permit, and enter state parks for free. Michigan Department of Natural Resources Parks and Recreation Director Ron Olson tells WSJM News the state’s parks have been popular lately.

“Particularly this year and last year with the COVID, folks wanted to get outside,” Olson said. “Then this year so far, the usership and people getting out has been decidedly greater than it’s been for a long time, particularly during the week.”

Olson notes although the activities covered by the free weekend will have no cost, the other rules still apply. Free Fishing and Free ORV weekends take place twice a year on back-to-back days.
