South Haven Township Home Destroyed In Explosion

Two people have been injured in a South Haven Township house explosion. South Haven Area Emergency Services has released the following:

An explosion pulverized a South Haven Township (Van Buren County) residence seriously injuring the two occupants on Tuesday night.

South Haven Area Emergency Services (SHAES) responded at 5:57 p.m. to the 70th block of 2nd Avenue.

An explosion could be heard approximately two miles from the scene, according to a state police trooper who was on Interstate 196.

The one-story, ranch style house disintegrated in the explosion. Reports are that neighbors rescued the two occupants, a male and a female who were taken to Bronson-South Hospital for immediate treatment. One of the occupants was flown by helicopter to a South Bend Hospital.

The subsequent fire was extinguished by firefighters from SHAES, Bangor Community, Columbia Township and Ganges Township departments. Covert Township ambulance transported one of the victims. South Haven Police Department and Michigan State Police assisted at the scene.

The cause remains under investigation. A state Fire Marshal has been requested.

It was the second major fire in South Haven today. Earlier in the day fire damaged a commercial building, Adventure Water Sports on Dunkley Avenue in the city.
